The Board of Control for Cricket in India has indicated that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should engage in domestic cricket to maintain their match fitness. With their retirement from Test and T20 formats, they are focusing on ODIs.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy, slated for December 24, presents a suitable opportunity, falling between the ODI series against South Africa (December 3–9) and the series versus New Zealand starting January 11.
Rohit Sharma has communicated with the Mumbai Cricket Association about his likely participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, while Virat Kohli's status remains uncertain.
In their last ODI series in Australia, Rohit concluded with a hundred in the final match, and Kohli rebounded from two ducks to secure an unbeaten 87.
Sources from the board indicated that taking part in domestic games is crucial for players who have stepped back from certain formats. This will help both Kohli and Rohit sustain their competitive edge and match fitness.
Rohit has also been training at the Sharad Pawar indoor academy in Mumbai and may enter the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament beginning November 26. There are hopes for Kohli, currently in London, to also engage in domestic matches.
Ajit Agarkar, chair of the selection committee, emphasized the necessity of domestic cricket for all players. He mentioned that whenever available, participation in these competitions is essential for maintaining sharpness and form amid international commitments.
In the previous season, both players participated in one Ranji Trophy match each, marking Kohli's first return to Delhi in 12 years and Rohit's appearance for Mumbai after a decade.
Rohit shared that his lack of domestic cricket experience was due to an intense international schedule since 2019, highlighting the need to take breaks for rejuvenation. He noted that this strategy has been methodically managed by the board.
Engaging in domestic cricket now allows them to regain form and prepare for forthcoming ODIs without adding undue pressure.
Agarkar clarified that Kohli and Rohit are not undergoing trials despite their infrequent appearances. Their performance in domestic matches will aid in evaluating their match fitness, but their positions in the team for future tournaments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup, are secure.
The selection committee is focusing on long-term strategies, looking to seamlessly integrate domestic performance to ensure consistency and readiness for significant series and tournaments.
With ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand approaching, competitions like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and potentially the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament will help both Kohli and Rohit stay in form.
This initiative ensures that India's senior players maintain their competitive edge, effectively balancing rest and preparation, thus shaping a formidable team for the forthcoming years of international cricket.
