Kokuho Sweeps Japan Academy Film Prize

Kokuho Sweeps Japan Academy Film Prize

Post by : Shakul

The film Kokuho dominated the Japan Academy Film Prize by winning a record 10 awards at the 49th edition of the ceremony held in Tokyo.

Directed by Lee Sang-il, the movie secured several major honors including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor. Actor Ryo Yoshizawa won the Best Actor award for his role portraying a kabuki performer striving to master the traditional art of playing female roles.

“Kokuho” tells the story of two kabuki actors competing to become leading onnagata, performers who specialize in female roles in traditional Japanese theater. The film also stars Ryusei Yokohama as Yoshizawa’s rival and fellow kabuki performer.

Screenwriter Satoko Okudera received the Best Screenplay award, further contributing to the film’s impressive sweep at the awards ceremony.

The film has also achieved remarkable commercial success. As of early March 2026, “Kokuho” had grossed more than ¥20 billion (over $130 million) at the Japanese box office, making it one of the highest-grossing Japanese live-action films in recent years.

Meanwhile, veteran actress Chieko Baisho won the Best Actress award for her performance in the film Tokyo Taxi.

In the animation category, the award for Best Animated Film went to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns, continuing the franchise’s strong presence in Japan’s film industry.

The Demon Slayer franchise, based on the globally popular manga series, has consistently drawn huge audiences in theaters and remains one of Japan’s most successful anime properties.

The Japan Academy Film Prize is considered one of the most prestigious film awards in Japan, honoring achievements across the country’s film industry each year. The 49th ceremony celebrated outstanding performances, filmmaking and storytelling that have shaped Japanese cinema over the past year.
