Hannah Yeoh has announced that 45 additional green and open spaces in Kuala Lumpur have been officially gazetted, bringing the total number of protected areas in the city to 539. The move is aimed at preserving urban green spaces for public use and environmental sustainability.
The newly protected areas span approximately 277,663 square metres, equivalent to nearly 39 football fields. These spaces have now been permanently designated for community use, ensuring that they cannot be converted for development in the future.
Yeoh emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding public spaces for families and future generations. She noted that the effort is being driven by a dedicated task force focused on identifying and securing green areas across the capital.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Fadlun Mak Ujud stated that the initiative aligns with plans to transform the city into a “sponge city.” This concept focuses on improving water absorption, reducing flood risks, and managing urban heat through increased green coverage.
The announcement builds on an earlier effort in February 2026, when nearly 500 green spaces were gazetted. Authorities say the process is ongoing, with more areas under evaluation for future protection.
Officials also highlighted that transparency is a key part of the initiative, with details of all gazetted sites being made publicly available online. This allows residents to stay informed and ensures accountability in urban planning decisions.
Overall, the move is seen as a significant step toward sustainable urban development in Kuala Lumpur, balancing rapid growth with environmental protection and improving quality of life for residents.
