Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Erlist Akunbekov, visited the Naryn region to inspect the ongoing construction work at the Kulanak Hydropower Plant. The visit focused on evaluating the project's progress and ensuring that construction activities remain on schedule.
Strategic Energy Project for Kyrgyzstan
The Kulanak HPP is one of the country's major energy infrastructure projects. Located in the Naryn region, the hydropower facility is being developed with a planned generation capacity of 100 megawatts and is expected to play a key role in strengthening Kyrgyzstan’s energy sector.
Major Construction Work Underway
Construction teams are currently working on several key components of the project, including the dam, the hydroelectric power station building and a 6.5-kilometer water supply canal. Work is progressing simultaneously across multiple sections of the site.
Hundreds of Workers Involved
Around 600 workers are currently employed at the construction site. During the peak summer construction season, the workforce is expected to increase to approximately 1,200 people as development activities accelerate.
Focus on Energy Security
Officials said the project is designed to improve national energy security and support regional development. In addition to electricity generation, the hydropower project is expected to contribute to the improvement of irrigation infrastructure in the region.
Completion Target Set for 2027
During the inspection, Erlist Akunbekov instructed project managers and contractors to ensure that all construction work is completed on time and according to quality standards. Authorities confirmed that the facility is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.
Project Expected to Reduce Power Deficit
Once operational, the Kulanak Hydropower Plant is expected to generate approximately 435.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The project will significantly help reduce Kyrgyzstan’s electricity shortage and support the country's growing energy demands.
