Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has confirmed his entry into the upcoming Kooyong Classic, an exhibition event that serves as a precursor to the Australian Open. This decision reflects Kyrgios' aim to re-enter competitive tennis after facing a challenging 2025 season plagued by injuries.
At 30, the Australian tennis star, renowned for his dynamic playing style, has contended with serious injuries in recent years. His participation was severely limited in 2025, where he played only five singles matches, with his last outing at the Miami Open in March. These challenges have seen him tumble to 666th in the global rankings, which has impacted his standing significantly.
Given his current ranking, Kyrgios will require wildcards to enter ATP warm-up tournaments leading to the Australian Open, including the Grand Slam event itself. Nonetheless, it is expected that wildcards will be granted, thanks to his former triumph at the Brisbane International and enduring popularity among fans at Melbourne Park.
Kyrgios' itinerary for late 2025 includes various exhibition matches, notably a highly anticipated “battle of the sexes” against Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on December 28. Such events are crucial for him as he works on regaining both match fitness and competitive edge ahead of the 2026 season.
The Kooyong Classic promises to host a vibrant and competitive lineup next year, featuring notable Italian players such as Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and World No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti in the men’s draw. Although this year’s event was cancelled due to operational challenges, it is set to return from January 13 to 15, just days before the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
His participation at the Kooyong Classic is expected to attract considerable attention from both fans and media alike. Kyrgios’ trademark powerful serves and creative shot-making have earned him a devoted following globally. Event organizers are hopeful that his involvement will enhance ticket sales and viewership at the Classic, a vital precursor to the Grand Slam season.
The Kooyong Classic offers players a vital chance to acclimate to conditions in Australia, strategize, and build confidence on hard courts before the Grand Slam event. For Kyrgios, navigating his way back to fitness and form post-injury at this exhibition signifies a crucial step in his competitive comeback.
Alongside Kyrgios, the tournament allows other top players to refine their skills, connect with fans, and engage in competitive play before the season's first Grand Slam. The eagerly awaited return of the Kooyong Classic is seen as a noteworthy resurgence in the tennis calendar and a prime opportunity for Kyrgios to make his much-anticipated return to the sport.
