Women’s 100m Final to Kick Off LA 2028 Olympics

Women’s 100m Final to Kick Off LA 2028 Olympics

Post by : Maya Rahman

The LA 2028 Olympic Games have revealed that the women’s 100 meters final will headline the inaugural day of events. This represents a significant scheduling shift from previous Olympic Games, moving athletics into the first week and relocating swimming to the second. The organisers believe this change will allow swimmers to partake in the Opening Ceremony, which is a rare opportunity for them.

This scheduling adjustment is primarily driven by the need to accommodate venue logistics at SoFi Stadium and the LA Memorial Coliseum. Parts of the Opening Ceremony will take place at SoFi Stadium, which will later host swimming events. Consequently, athletics have been assigned to the historic LA Memorial Coliseum to ensure SoFi Stadium is well-prepared for the swimming competitions that follow.

Shana Ferguson, Chief of Sport and Games Delivery for LA28, has expressed that starting the Games with such an exhilarating event is crucial. She referred to the women’s 100 meters race as one of the Olympic Games' most exhilarating and widely viewed competitions, emphasizing the desire to open with impactful excitement.

Welcoming the scheduling change, Janet Evans—four-time Olympic swimming champion and Chief Athlete Officer for LA28—noted that this adjustment allows for increased participation in the Opening Ceremony by swimmers, who typically miss it due to early competitions. She added that this new timetable will foster a genuine Olympic experience for athletes.

The new schedule results from extensive discussions with the International Olympic Committee and various sports governing bodies, considering several factors including athlete well-being, broadcast timings, and environmental conditions such as weather and light. Ferguson highlighted that the safety and comfort of both competitors and spectators were paramount in this planning. For instance, equestrian events received special focus to ensure the well-being of horses, mindful of heat and surface conditions.

Additionally, the first competition day will feature the women’s triathlon along with multiple women’s finals. This unprecedented scheduling reflects LA28’s dedication to promoting gender equality in sports.

One standout moment later in the Games will be “Super Saturday” on Day 15, which is expected to showcase 26 medal events spanning 23 sports. The LA28 team projects that women will represent a majority of the competing athletes. New sports such as flag football and squash will debut, alongside the return of cricket, lacrosse, and baseball/softball.

Ferguson further noted that LA28 aims to distribute approximately 14 million tickets across 51 Olympic sports at 49 venues. Ticket registration will open in January 2026, with public sales commencing in April. Prices will remain fixed and unaffected by demand, with measures in place to curtail ticket reselling issues.

To ensure a minimal environmental footprint, nearly 77 percent of Olympic sessions will occur in existing venues, with the remainder in temporary locations like Long Beach and the Sepulveda Basin. Most temporary materials are set for reuse or recycling post-Games.

Returning sport softball will be hosted at top-tier venues in Oklahoma City, extending the Olympic spirit throughout the United States. Evans praised this decision for ensuring premier facilities for participants.

Lastly, LA28 officials confirmed ongoing collaborations with local, state, and federal authorities to facilitate visa support and enhance event execution. They have established a specialized team for visa assistance to aid athletes, officials, and spectators in their travel arrangements leading up to and during the Games.

With these initiatives, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is poised to unveil a unique Olympic experience, beginning with the exhilarating women’s 100 meters final and continuing with a blend of tradition, innovation, and inclusivity.
