Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen was eliminated by local hero Kenta Nishimoto during the semifinals of the Japan Masters, part of the BWF World Tour Super 500 series. This thrilling contest unfolded on Saturday in Kumamoto City, lasting one hour and 17 minutes, and concluded with a score of 19-21, 21-14, 12-21 in Nishimoto's favour. Consequently, Sen's journey in this tournament has come to an end.
The match commenced with both athletes demonstrating fierce competitiveness. Lakshya surged ahead early, establishing an 8-3 lead. However, Nishimoto quickly shifted gears, scoring seven consecutive points to take a 10-9 lead. The sharpness of Nishimoto's smashes posed significant challenges for Lakshya, who struggled to regain control. The score reached 18-18 before a tactical drop shot from Nishimoto earned him game points, securing the first game at 21-19.
In the second game, Lakshya initially trailed at 1-5 but swiftly adapted his strategy, wherein he won eight of the last nine points before the interval. With a blend of clever net play, powerful smashes, and solid defense, Lakshya turned the tide to establish a 20-14 lead, ultimately winning the second game 21-14 and equalizing the match.
The final game saw Nishimoto regain his dominance, initiating a 5-2 lead. Although Lakshya attempted to counter with agile defense and quick movements, Nishimoto continuously built on his lead, reaching 14-7 by the interval. As the opposition grew, Lakshya fell short during critical moments, leading to Nishimoto realizing eight match points and clinching the deciding game 21-12, progressing to the finals.
This match showcased Nishimoto's strategic understanding and formidable endurance, while Lakshya displayed notable resilience, especially in the second game. The contest, filled with lengthy rallies and swift exchanges, captivated the audience throughout its duration.
Following this victory, Nishimoto is set to compete in the Japan Masters final against either compatriot Kodai Naraoka or Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei. In the meantime, Lakshya Sen will need to regroup after this setback, as he continues to pursue success in the BWF World Tour, aiming for improved outcomes in future matches.
Despite facing defeat, Lakshya Sen exhibited remarkable skill and competitive spirit, affirming his status as a leading contender on the circuit. His semifinal showing serves as an invaluable experience, highlighting his potential to challenge elite players like Nishimoto in upcoming BWF tournaments.
