Hong Kong Bookseller Lam Wing-kee Dies at 70

Hong Kong Bookseller Lam Wing-kee Dies at 70

Post by : Shakul

Lam Wing-kee, the former Hong Kong bookseller whose disappearance in 2015 drew global attention to concerns over freedom of expression in Hong Kong, has died in Taiwan at the age of 70. According to reports, Lam passed away in Taipei after battling cancer. His death marks the end of a life that became closely associated with the fight for free speech and democratic values in the region.

A Symbol of Resistance Against Censorship

Lam gained international recognition after he was among five people connected to Hong Kong's Causeway Bay Books who disappeared in late 2015. The bookstore was known for selling publications about Chinese political leaders and sensitive political topics. After reappearing months later, Lam publicly described being detained by mainland Chinese authorities and said he had been forced to confess on television, making him a prominent symbol of resistance against censorship.

A New Beginning in Taiwan

Fearing legal action following the political changes in Hong Kong, Lam relocated to Taiwan in 2019. A year later, he reopened Causeway Bay Books in Taipei, hoping to preserve a space where readers could freely access books that might not be available elsewhere. Although health problems forced him to temporarily close the bookstore earlier this year, Lam remained committed to defending freedom of expression until his final days.

Tributes Highlight His Legacy

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te expressed condolences following Lam's death, praising his courage and determination. The president said Lam's actions reminded future generations of the importance of protecting democracy and freedom. Supporters and human rights advocates also remembered him as a man who risked his own safety to speak publicly about his experiences.

Hong Kong's Changing Political Climate

Lam's story unfolded during a period of increasing political tension between Hong Kong and Beijing. Since the large-scale protests in 2019, authorities have introduced stricter national security measures, leading to arrests of activists, journalists, publishers, and others accused of violating security laws. His experience remains one of the most widely known examples of concerns surrounding press freedom and civil liberties.

Remembered for Courage and Conviction

Even after leaving Hong Kong, Lam continued to advocate for freedom of speech and independent publishing. Friends and supporters say his determination inspired many people across Asia and beyond. His legacy is expected to remain an important chapter in discussions about human rights, democracy, and the protection of free expression.
