Justice Department Joins Lawsuit Over Alleged Racial Discrimination in Los Angeles Schools

Justice Department Joins Lawsuit Over Alleged Racial Discrimination in Los Angeles Schools

Post by : Shakul

The U.S. Justice Department has joined a lawsuit against the administrators of the Los Angeles Unified School District over its PHBAO Program. This program classifies students and school areas based on race to decide school funding and magnet school admissions. The case has been filed in a federal court in California.

The lawsuit was originally filed by an education-focused nonprofit organization. According to the complaint, the program separates students into racial groups and considers neighborhoods with a low percentage of White residents as disadvantaged, giving them special benefits.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi said that equal treatment is a basic constitutional right and schools must follow it. She stated that the Justice Department will continue to work to ensure fairness for public school students in Los Angeles.

Civil rights officials said that students should not be treated differently because of their race. They argued that the program gives advantages based on racial identity, which is unlawful and against American values.

The Justice Department claims that the school district provides extra funding, reduces class sizes, and gives admission preference to certain students based on race. Officials believe the long-running desegregation program has become unconstitutional and should be ended to ensure equal treatment for all students.
