A 3.9‑magnitude earthquake struck the Ladakh region early Friday morning, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported, in a seismic event that was felt locally but did not result in any immediate damage or injuries.
According to the NCS, the tremor occurred at 08:31 am IST on March 27, 2026, with an epicentre near Leh and a shallow focal depth of about 10 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.
Shallow earthquakes — those occurring less than 70 km below ground — are more likely to be felt by residents but often cause limited damage when magnitudes are low, especially in sparsely populated or mountainous areas like Ladakh.
While this event was relatively mild, Ladakh lies in a tectonically active Himalayan belt formed by the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, a process that generates frequent seismic activity.
Officials confirmed there were no reports of structural damage or casualties in the aftermath of Friday’s quake, and residents returned to routine activities shortly after the tremor was felt.
Seismic monitoring agencies continue to observe the region closely, given its high earthquake risk, although scientists say such smaller quakes are common and part of the natural geological processes shaping the Himalayas.
