Liege Airport Operations Resume Post Drone Incident

Liege Airport Operations Resume Post Drone Incident

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Liege, Belgium – After a drone sighting prompted a temporary halt in operations, Belgium’s Liege Airport has successfully resumed flights, as confirmed by the nation’s air traffic control on Friday. This incident marks the second disruption by drones impacting Belgian airports within a week.

The air traffic control unit, Skeyes, reported a drone sighting over the airport around 06:30 GMT, leading to a shutdown lasting roughly 30 minutes. Kurt Verwilligen, a Skeyes spokesperson, emphasized the need for serious consideration of all reports, ensuring that flights have now resumed without further issues.

Earlier in the week, drone sightings at both Brussels and Liege Airports had resulted in the diversion of multiple flights and the postponement of some departures. This pattern has raised alarms among authorities concerning the regularity of drone incidents near airports and military sites, which have increasingly affected air traffic across Europe.

Belgium isn't the only country grappling with this issue. Other nations, such as Sweden, have reported disruptions due to drone activities, with flights halted just recently. Some security analysts have pointed towards the possibility of “hybrid warfare” tactics, although Moscow has contested any claims of involvement.

In reaction to these rising concerns, the Belgian government convened an urgent meeting involving senior ministers and security personnel on Thursday. Defense officials have indicated the alarming series of drone sightings could be a sign of organized actions, stressing the need for improved security measures around vital infrastructure.

As Belgium continues to tackle the issue of drone-related disturbances, air travelers are encouraged to stay informed through airport authorities. The recent events emphasize the challenges posed by unmanned aerial vehicles near major airports, necessitating rigorous safety protocols across Europe.
