Liverpool's struggles continued as the team suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday at Anfield, leaving the mood at the club extremely bleak. The loss marked Liverpool's ninth defeat in their last 12 games across all competitions, their worst 12-game stretch since the 1953-54 season.
Manager Arne Slot admitted the situation is worrying, saying, "The emotions are very negative and disappointing. I was hoping for a better performance, because even when we lose, our performances have usually been stronger." He added that the team is conceding too many goals, making it hard to compete even in matches where chances are created.
Liverpool's recent run has been particularly shocking as they have lost their last three games by three goals and have struggled to defend their home ground, Anfield. Fans are frustrated as defeats at home have already surpassed last season's total.
The club's troubles come despite a record summer transfer window where Liverpool spent 446 million pounds ($599 million) to strengthen the squad. Notable additions included British-record signing Alexander Isak, who has yet to make a significant impact on the pitch. Star forward Mohamed Salah has also struggled to find the form that made him the Premier League's top scorer last season.
Midfielder Curtis Jones expressed his disappointment but emphasized determination: "It's hard because I'm playing for the team I support. I haven’t seen a Liverpool team go through a period like this with results like these. But we still have that badge on our chest, and we’re going to fight to bring this team back to where it needs to be."
Liverpool now faces a critical period to turn their season around and restore faith among fans after a disastrous start in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
