Luis Rubiales Attacked with Eggs at His Book Launch in Madrid

Luis Rubiales Attacked with Eggs at His Book Launch in Madrid

Post by : Maya Rahman

During the launch of his new book in Madrid, Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Association, was unexpectedly attacked with eggs. While promoting his book titled “Matar a Rubiales” (meaning “Killing Rubiales”), chaos erupted when a man in the audience threw eggs, leading to panic. This dramatic turn of events quickly became a hot topic in media outlets across Spain.

In an interview with Radio MARCA after the incident, Rubiales disclosed that the assailant was, in fact, his own uncle. He described him as a long-time troublemaker who has caused issues before. Initially, Rubiales didn’t recognize what the man was throwing at him and feared for his safety, thinking it could be a weapon. It was only after the eggs were flung that he grasped the situation.

The event took place at Espacio Eventize, a notable venue in Madrid where many had gathered to listen to Rubiales discuss his life and the controversies surrounding it. The sudden attack shocked the audience, and security authorities rushed in to handle the situation, which escalated the tension in the atmosphere dramatically. Nonetheless, Rubiales persevered, continuing his speech with poise.

Rubiales has been under fire since 2023 for various incidents, the most notorious being the unsolicited kiss he gave to footballer Jenni Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup celebrations in Sydney. This incident sparked widespread public outrage, notably from women’s rights organizations, athletes, and officials, who interpreted it as a significant example of sexism and power misuse in Spanish sports.

The legal ramifications followed swiftly; Rubiales was ruled guilty of sexual assault for the kiss, which was deemed non-consensual by Spain’s High Court. He was subjected to a fine of over 10,000 euros, with FIFA subsequently banning him from all football activities for three years.

The situation has ignited a broader conversation in Spain about themes of sexism and abuse of power. Women’s football advocates and supporters rallied after the scandal, influencing the “Me Too” movement in the country, empowering many women to share their experiences of harassment.

“Matar a Rubiales” aims to chronicle his perspective on the life-altering events, discussing public scrutiny, legal challenges, and media portrayal. It also shares his personal struggles and emotional experiences during the aftermath of the incident. The egg incident at his book launch has generated significant buzz regarding this contentious release.

Rubiales’ uncle’s shocking attack adds another layer to the ongoing narrative surrounding him. Although the incident didn’t result in harm, it underscores the tense climate that surrounds Rubiales. This chaotic event not only reflects the pressing public sentiment towards him but also hints at the potential impacts on his personal relationships.

What began as a straightforward book launch quickly transformed into a chaotic episode for Luis Rubiales. The incident has compounded the already multifaceted perspectives about him in Spain. While he hopes to convey his narrative through his writing, the controversies continue to loom large over his life. The egg incident will surely remain a pivotal moment in his evolving public story.
