Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has launched a major investigation into the alleged embezzlement of RM230 million involving a non-governmental organisation. Authorities are currently tracing the flow of funds through multiple banking channels to uncover how the money was misused.
Chief commissioner Azam Baki said that the commission is working to obtain detailed financial records from several banks. These records are expected to provide clarity on how funds were transferred into personal accounts over a period stretching from 2018 to the present.
Investigators have already found strong indications that a portion of the funds was used for personal gain. This includes the purchase of high-value assets such as residential properties, office spaces, and land parcels.
According to officials, assets worth approximately RM18.36 million have been seized so far. These include multiple houses, a luxury bungalow, office units, and land located in different parts of Malaysia.
The probe is also expanding to include individuals and organisations that may have benefited from the misused funds. Authorities have not ruled out summoning family members or other recipients for questioning as part of the investigation process.
The commission confirmed that the funds involved were public donations and not related to religious contributions such as zakat. This has raised concerns about how charitable funds are monitored and managed.
Azam Baki emphasized the need for stronger laws and mechanisms to regulate financial flows into NGOs. He noted that the absence of strict oversight has made it easier for funds to be misused, and efforts are now underway to improve transparency and accountability.
