Malaysia's Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has confirmed reports of a Malayan tiger sighting near the Sungai Relai Bridge in Gua Musang, Kelantan. The confirmation came after a video showing the tiger crossing the area circulated widely on social media, drawing attention from residents and wildlife conservation groups.
According to Perhilitan Director-General Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, officers from the Gua Musang district wildlife office immediately conducted investigations following the report. Initial findings suggest that the tiger was simply passing through the area before returning to its natural habitat in the surrounding forest.
Authorities carried out inspections at the location where the sighting was reported. However, no further traces of the animal were found during the operation. Officials also confirmed that no complaints or reports of disturbances involving local residents had been received before or after the incident.
The sighting highlights the presence of the critically endangered Malayan tiger, one of the rarest big cat species in the world. Conservationists have long warned that habitat fragmentation and human encroachment can occasionally bring wildlife closer to roads, villages, and other populated areas.
Perhilitan has urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid approaching or disturbing wild animals if encountered. Wildlife experts stressed that direct interaction with large predators can be dangerous and may also disrupt their natural behavior.
Residents who spot wildlife are encouraged to immediately report the incident to Perhilitan through its official hotline. Timely reporting helps authorities monitor animal movements and take necessary measures to protect both the public and the animals involved.
Officials stated that monitoring activities in the area will continue as part of ongoing conservation efforts. The department emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the Malayan tiger population while ensuring the safety of communities living near forested regions of Kelantan and other parts of Malaysia.
