Malaysia Urges Protection of Bab el-Mandeb Shipping Route

Malaysia Urges Protection of Bab el-Mandeb Shipping Route

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Malaysia has voiced serious concern over recent announcements and threats made by the Houthis regarding the possible restriction or closure of passage through the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry stressed the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring the safety and security of commercial shipping routes. The ministry called on all parties involved to respect international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Malaysia Calls for Restraint and Dialogue

The Foreign Ministry said that, at a time of increasing tensions across the Middle East, all sides should exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions or threats that could disrupt maritime transit.

The ministry stated that lasting regional stability can only be achieved through constructive dialogue, diplomatic engagement, and strict adherence to the rules-based international order.

It also confirmed that Malaysia will continue to closely monitor developments in the region through its diplomatic missions abroad.

Strategic Waterway Vital for Global Trade

The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, highlighted the global importance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, describing it as a critical maritime route linking Asia and Europe.

According to the statement, any disruption to shipping through this strategic corridor would have economic consequences not only for countries in the region but also for economies around the world.

Malaysia Warns of Risks to Global Supply Chains

Wisma Putra said Malaysia's economy depends heavily on open, secure, and uninterrupted international maritime trade. As a trading nation, the country views any disruption to major global shipping chokepoints as a direct and unacceptable threat to international supply chains, energy security, and the global economic recovery.

The ministry emphasized the need to keep key maritime routes open to support stable international trade and economic activity.

Advisory Issued for Malaysian Shipping Operators

Wisma Putra also advised all Malaysian-registered vessels and shipping operators to remain highly vigilant and follow the latest maritime security advisories while operating in the region.
