Malaysia, Thailand Hold Talks Over Shrimp Import Dispute

Malaysia, Thailand Hold Talks Over Shrimp Import Dispute

Post by : Shakul

Malaysia and Thailand are engaged in intensive discussions to resolve a temporary suspension on shrimp imports that has become a key trade issue between the two neighboring countries. Officials from both sides are working toward a solution that protects national interests while maintaining strong bilateral trade relations.

Malaysia's Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the matter has received attention at the highest levels of government and remains under active negotiation. He stressed that both countries are seeking a balanced outcome that addresses concerns from all parties involved.

Suspension Introduced Over Biosecurity Concerns

The issue stems from Malaysia's decision to temporarily suspend imports of five species of shrimp from Thailand beginning June 1, 2026. The measure was introduced as part of tighter controls on fisheries products entering the country.

Malaysian authorities stated that the move was necessary to strengthen biosecurity measures and ensure imported seafood products meet national safety standards. The suspension affects several commercially important shrimp species commonly traded between the two nations.

Thailand Responds To Malaysian Requirements

Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security confirmed that Thailand has submitted responses to a questionnaire regarding fisheries exports and biosecurity compliance. Officials are now reviewing and verifying the information provided.

According to ministry representatives, a detailed assessment and audit process is underway to determine whether Thailand's export procedures satisfy Malaysia's import requirements and regulations.

Five Shrimp Species Affected

The temporary suspension applies to Penaeus esculentes, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, Penaeus vannamei, Penaeus monodon and Penaeus stylirostris. These species represent a significant portion of Thailand's shrimp exports to Malaysia.

In addition to the shrimp restrictions, Malaysia has also introduced certificate of analysis requirements for imported seabass from Thailand as part of broader fisheries import controls.

Potential Trade Escalation

Thailand has reportedly indicated that it may raise the matter before the World Trade Organization and ASEAN forums if bilateral negotiations do not produce a satisfactory resolution.

Trade analysts believe both countries are likely to seek a diplomatic solution due to the importance of agricultural and seafood trade within the region.

Government Seeks Balanced Outcome

Minister Mohamad Sabu emphasized that Malaysia's primary objective is to safeguard national interests while maintaining constructive relations with Thailand. Officials noted that discussions remain positive and ongoing.

The Malaysian government continues to evaluate all technical and scientific information before making any final decision regarding the suspension.

Regional Trade Implications

The outcome of the negotiations could have broader implications for regional seafood trade and biosecurity standards within ASEAN. Industry stakeholders are closely monitoring developments as both governments work toward a mutually acceptable solution.

Authorities from both countries are expected to continue consultations in the coming weeks as efforts intensify to resolve the issue and restore normal trade flows.
