Malaysia Set to Host Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang in 2026

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Dubai, UAE: Formula 1 has confirmed that in 2026, the Bahrain Grand Prix will take place at Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, following an agreement with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Formula One Management (FOM), and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia.

This race, pending final contractual formalities and approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council, will be staged as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. It will occupy a slot between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, while the rest of the 2026 Formula 1 calendar remains unchanged.

Securing Bahrain's Spot on the F1 Calendar

This new arrangement ensures that Bahrain's Grand Prix continues to be part of the 2026 championship, addressing logistical challenges that posed difficulties in hosting the event in its traditional location. Thanks to coordinated efforts between Formula 1's governing bodies and both governments, an alternative venue was confirmed without disrupting the overall championship schedule.

Officials noted that this decision is indicative of Formula 1's agility in adapting while safeguarding the interests of teams, partners, broadcasters, and millions of fans worldwide.

Sepang Circuit's Return to Formula 1

The reinstatement of Sepang International Circuit signifies a welcome back for one of the sport's renowned venues. The Malaysian circuit is celebrated for its thrilling races, characterized by a fast layout, technical corners, and unpredictable tropical weather.

With long straights, demanding braking zones, and fluctuating track conditions, Sepang has long been a favorite among both drivers and racing fans. Its return is expected to attract significant interest from fans across Asia and globally.

FIA Emphasizes Global Collaboration

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlighted that this agreement showcases the strong collaboration between Formula One Management, Bahrain, and Malaysia. He emphasized that every option was meticulously evaluated, prioritizing the safety and well-being of teams, officials, volunteers, and spectators.

He also remarked that Malaysia's contributions to Formula 1's legacy are significant and that Sepang's return exemplifies the strength of international partnerships within motorsport.

Support from Bahrain and Malaysia

Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa expressed that the initiative underscores the close rapport between Bahrain and Malaysia. He reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment to Formula 1 and extended gratitude to the FIA, Formula One Management, Bahrain International Circuit, Sepang International Circuit, and the participating teams for facilitating this event.

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed that Malaysia is privileged to host the Bahrain Grand Prix and eagerly anticipates welcoming Formula 1 teams, officials, and enthusiasts back to Sepang. He viewed this event as a testament to the strong partnership between the two nations and an opportunity to showcase Malaysia's exceptional sporting infrastructure and hospitality.

Formula 1 Optimistic About Fan Experience at Sepang

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali stated that the revised schedule reflects the sport's capability to overcome challenges through teamwork and innovation. He expressed appreciation to the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia, along with the FIA, for their support in ensuring a comprehensive championship calendar.

He noted that Sepang's return is fantastic news for Formula 1 fans, offering them another chance to witness the action at one of the sport's most iconic circuits.
