The Malaysian government is almost done reviewing its online shopping laws. This big update started in April last year to make sure people who buy and sell online are protected and treated fairly.
The review looks at current laws like the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and the Electronic Commerce Act 2006. Officials are checking if these laws are still good enough or if they need to change or add new ones to match today’s fast-growing online shopping world.
Right now, there are no clear rules for big online platforms or sellers. So, the government is deciding whether it should create a system where these businesses need licenses or they should follow simple rules to make things safe and fair for everyone.
The minister said the goal isn’t to make things harder for businesses but to support their growth while protecting buyers.
They’ve already talked to over 60 groups, including companies, government departments, and users. Another town hall with business owners will be held on July 17 to hear more ideas before the final decision is made.
If everything goes as planned, the updated rules will be sent to the Cabinet by August. After that, they could become official laws by the end of the year.
Malaysia’s online shopping industry is expected to make RM1.65 trillion this year, so these updates are very important.
