New York: Voting stations across all five boroughs opened Tuesday at 6:00 am and will remain open until 9:00 pm (GMT) as the city completes voting in one of its most closely watched mayoral contests. Nearly five million registered New Yorkers are eligible to participate in the final day of balloting.
The New York City Board of Elections reported a historic early turnout, with 734,317 votes cast during the nine-day early voting window—more than quadruple the early participation recorded in 2021.
RealClearPolitics’ polling average places Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani atop the field with 46.1%, ahead of independent Andrew Cuomo at 31.8% and Republican Curtis Sliwa on 16.3%.
Mamdani, a Queens Assembly member and son of South Asian and Ugandan immigrants, has drawn strong support from younger and progressive voters. His platform — proposing universal free childcare, fare-free buses and a citywide rent freeze — signals a generational and policy shift in the city’s politics.
His momentum follows the exit of former mayor Eric Adams, who stepped down earlier this year amid a federal bribery case that was later dismissed, opening space for new contenders to emerge.
Andrew Cuomo, campaigning as an independent, frames his bid around public safety, economic recovery and infrastructure renewal, aiming to appeal to centrist and moderate constituencies. His campaign received a surprising boost when endorsements from President Donald Trump and Elon Musk surfaced on Monday, an alliance analysts say could influence swing voters.
Republican Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, continues to stress law-and-order policies alongside animal welfare and homelessness solutions, though he remains well behind in the polls.
Analysts expect high turnout as voters decide between markedly different visions for New York’s future. The outcome will not only determine city leadership for the next four years but may also shape broader national debates on urban governance and progressive politics.
