For months, Indonesian audiences have been captivated by Norma, a film based on one of the country’s most talked-about viral scandals. The movie tells the story of a seemingly happy marriage destroyed when a husband has an affair with his mother-in-law — a plotline drawn directly from real life.
The story first came to public attention in 2022, when Norma Risma, a woman from Serang City on Java island, revealed the affair between her husband and her mother in a TikTok video. The clip gained millions of views and became a national talking point, eventually leading to a film deal.
Released in Indonesian cinemas in March 2025 and later on Netflix in August, Norma quickly became one of the most watched titles not only in Indonesia but also in Malaysia and Singapore, where large Malay-Muslim audiences connected with the story.
The film follows a growing trend in Indonesia’s entertainment industry, where viral scandals and online stories are adapted for the screen. In recent years, films like KKN di Desa Penari (2022) and Sewu Dino (2023) achieved box-office success after being inspired by stories first shared on social media. Similarly, Ipar Adalah Maut (2024), about a man’s affair with his sister-in-law, and the drama series Layangan Putus (2022), also drew inspiration from viral TikTok stories.
The themes of Norma carry added weight in Indonesia, where adultery is both a taboo subject and a crime under national law. A new criminal code, due to take effect across the country next year, criminalises sex outside of marriage, while in Aceh, the most conservative province, public punishments already exist for such acts.
Cultural experts note that this environment of religious and social conservatism has only fuelled public fascination with household scandals, often shared online under the viral slang term pelakor (homewrecker). According to SM Gietty Tambunan, a member of the Jakarta Arts Council Film Committee, such films allow audiences to “peek into someone else’s household problems,” sparking both curiosity and debate.
For viewers, the emotional weight of the story has been a strong draw. Audiences have shared their reactions online, many expressing anger toward the husband and mother. In cinemas, several viewers reported being moved to tears during the film’s most dramatic scenes.
What distinguishes Norma from other scandal-inspired titles is the involvement of the real Norma Risma in the production process. Screenwriter Oka Aurora said she worked closely with Norma to ensure the film reflected her emotions and experiences, though some parts were dramatized for cinematic effect. Aurora, who also wrote Ipar Adalah Maut and Layangan Putus, described the project as both entertainment and a way for audiences to reflect on personal and social issues.
The real Norma’s life remains deeply tied to the events that inspired the film. Today, she continues to work in Serang, while her mother, Rihanah, returned to the family home after serving an eight-month prison term for adultery. Norma’s ex-husband Rozy received a nine-month sentence. Despite her painful experience, Norma has publicly shared that she found strength through messages from others who faced similar betrayals.
During a press event earlier this year, Norma said she initially believed she was alone in her suffering but later realised many women experienced the same struggles. Experts believe that films like Norma can provide a platform for women in Indonesia’s patriarchal society to speak out about infidelity and domestic troubles.
Although Norma declined interview requests, she continues to post updates on social media, where she receives strong support from followers. Recently, she shared photos of a celebratory cake sent by the film’s production company, drawing hundreds of encouraging comments from Indonesians who praised her courage in sharing her story.
