In a gripping encounter at Craven Cottage, Manchester City looked set for a comfortable win after establishing an early 5-1 lead against Fulham. Goals from Erling Haaland, Phil Foden (who scored twice), Tijjani Reijnders, and an own goal from Sander Berge cemented City's dominance.
However, a spirited Fulham side, energized by substitute Samuel Chukwueze, unleashed an incredible resurgence, scoring three quick goals and nearly equalizing in stoppage time. Ultimately, City held firm to secure a thrilling 5-4 victory in what stands out as one of the most dramatic matches of the Premier League season.
Haaland's historic milestone of reaching 100 Premier League goals in just 111 appearances marked a new record, as he contributed not only a goal but also two vital assists. Reflecting on the intense match, Haaland noted, “I was close to scoring, and then they made it 5-3, that’s the beauty of football.”
Pep Guardiola added a touch of humor while acknowledging the scare, quipping, “I’m quite old, and the players don’t respect me! They shouldn’t treat their manager this way. This only happens in our league.”
With this win, Manchester City remains two points behind leaders Arsenal, with the gap potentially widening based on the latter's next match against Brentford.
This match marked Fulham's first top-flight game with nine or more goals since a 7-2 defeat to West Ham in 1968, and their first home fixture of this caliber since 1965. Under Guardiola, City has now achieved five or more goals in a match 41 times across 356 Premier League matches. The game signifies City’s first league win while conceding four goals since December 1957 and highlights a record six Premier League games involving Manchester City with at least nine goals, bested only by Manchester United’s tally of seven.
Despite the offensively dazzling performance, City’s defensive frailties were evident. While Arsenal has allowed just seven goals in 13 matches, Manchester City has conceded 16 in 14. Former striker Clinton Morrison commented, “Manchester City has defensive issues... you’d never see Arsenal leading 5-1 and finishing like that.”
Guardiola, however, remains optimistic, focusing on the positives from the match. “Every game presents a new challenge for certain players. We had some really positive moments in the first half when we scored five and played well,” he noted. He believes the tense finish might enhance focus and resilience in upcoming contests.
The match between Manchester City and Fulham will be remembered for its explosive display of offensive prowess and the resilience shown, yet it serves as a reminder that champions must bolster their defenses to stay in title contention.
