The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur continues to pose a serious humanitarian and security challenge in 2026, nearly three years after clashes first erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023.
According to official estimates and recent reports, over 260 people have been killed and more than 60,000 people displaced, forcing thousands to live in relief camps or temporary shelters across the state.
Despite periods of relative calm, fresh incidents of violence continue to emerge. In April 2026, at least four people, including children, were killed in renewed clashes, prompting authorities to impose curfews and suspend internet services in affected areas.
The conflict, rooted in disputes over land rights, identity, and reservation policies, has created deep divisions between the valley-based Meitei population and hill-based Kuki-Zo tribes. Thousands of homes and religious structures have been destroyed, further worsening the humanitarian crisis.
The state has also witnessed large-scale displacement, with many families still struggling to return home. The government has initiated rehabilitation plans, aiming to resettle tens of thousands of internally displaced persons, but progress remains slow amid ongoing tensions.
Experts warn that without a long-term political solution and trust-building between communities, the region risks prolonged instability. The situation highlights the urgent need for sustained dialogue, stronger governance, and humanitarian support to restore peace in the conflict-hit state.
