The Dallas Mavericks clinched a thrilling 118-115 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, thanks to an outstanding performance from rookie Cooper Flagg. On Friday night, Flagg showcased his growing skills by scoring a season-high 29 points, with 12 crucial points in the final quarter during clutch moments. In addition to his scoring, he contributed seven rebounds and five assists, demonstrating his emergence as a vital player for Dallas.
This win was essential for the Mavericks, who had only managed to secure two victories in their previous 12 games. PJ Washington was instrumental as well, contributing 24 points, while Max Christie added a season-high 23 points. Jaden Hardy and Brandon Williams added 11 and 12 assists, respectively, ensuring the Mavericks remained competitive against a determined Pelicans side.
For New Orleans, Trey Murphy III topped the scoring charts with 25 points, complemented by Zion Williamson’s solid performance of 22 points. Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen effectively supported with 21 and 20 points respectively. Despite these significant individual efforts, the Pelicans couldn't halt their losing streak, now totaling eight consecutive games, while they also fell to 0-3 in West Group B of the NBA Cup. Meanwhile, the Mavericks improved to 1-2.
Tensions ran high in the game's closing moments. With just under two minutes remaining, Williamson converted a three-point play, giving New Orleans a 115-111 advantage. However, Dallas responded with resilience; Flagg's fortunate bounce shot narrowed the deficit, and moments later, Naji Marshall’s crucial three-pointer propelled the Mavericks to a 116-115 lead with only 31.7 seconds left.
As the Pelicans attempted to retaliate, a vital defensive play from PJ Washington halted Fears’ three-pointer. Christie then took to the line, successfully sinking both free throws to elevate the Mavericks to 118-115 with just 10.9 seconds on the clock.
In a last-ditch effort, the Pelicans had opportunities to tie the game, but Murphy and Queen both missed their three-point efforts. Washington secured the final rebound as time expired, solidifying a well-earned victory for the Mavericks.
Dallas displayed impressive shooting from beyond the arc, making 16 of 43 three-point attempts with Washington and Christie each landing five. Overall, the Mavericks shot 47.6% from the field, compared to New Orleans’ 46.2%, who struggled significantly from long range, making just seven out of 27 attempts.
The game witnessed numerous shifts in momentum, with the Pelicans leading 63-49 at halftime, fueled by Murphy’s 15 points. However, Dallas surged back in the third quarter, outscoring New Orleans 36-22, as they made five three-pointers while the Pelicans missed all four of theirs, giving Dallas a brief 78-74 lead after a three from Williams. The quarter concluded with the teams tied at 85 entering the final period.
Dallas played without D’Angelo Russell, who was sidelined due to illness, while several Pelicans players also faced minor injuries, complicating matters for the team.
This pivotal victory grants the Mavericks positive momentum as they advance in the NBA Cup, showcasing the rising potential of rookie Cooper Flagg, whose stellar performance was crucial in this match.
