Real Madrid produced a thrilling comeback against Olympiacos as Kylian Mbappe stole the show with an extraordinary four-goal performance, including the second fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history. The Spaniards overcame a rocky start to secure a 4-3 victory in Greece on Wednesday, ending a three-game winless streak across all competitions and claiming their first triumph at Olympiacos after five attempts.
The match began in favor of the hosts, with Chiquinho giving Olympiacos an early lead in the eighth minute. Real Madrid responded through Mbappe, who showcased his electric form by scoring three goals in just six minutes and 42 seconds during the first half. The France forward first slotted home a precise finish after beating two defenders, assisted by Vinicius Jr, leveling the score at 1-1. Moments later, he headed in a cross from Arda Guler, and quickly completed his hat-trick with another composed finish, giving Real a 3-1 lead by the 24th minute.
Despite Real’s dominance in the first half, Olympiacos refused to back down. Mehdi Taremi reduced the deficit seven minutes into the second half with a close-range header, igniting hope for the home side. However, Mbappe restored the two-goal cushion with his fourth strike on the hour mark, again assisted by Vinicius Jr, cementing his crucial role in the victory.
Even with Real in control, Olympiacos kept pressing and scored once more through Ayoub El Kaabi in the 81st minute. The Greek team continued to apply intense pressure in the closing stages, with El Kaabi and Gabriel Strefezza coming close to equalizing, but Real’s defense held firm to secure the win.
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso praised his side for maintaining composure under pressure and highlighted the importance of breaking the winless cycle. “The important thing was to win, to break the cycle, to feel that feeling,” Alonso said. “The three points were also important, to be in the top eight. It was competitive and hard-fought, but we needed it. In the Champions League, there are moments for everything, just like in the league. I really liked that at 1-0 we didn't lose our heads, we played calmly and maturely and turned it around. We are back to winning ways, and we won in Greece for the first time.”
Alonso also singled out Mbappe for his exceptional contribution, noting his goals and leadership. “Mbappe is very important, that goes without saying. His goals are fundamental, but that's not all. His personality, teamwork, unity,” he added.
The win boosts Real Madrid to fifth place in the Champions League standings with 12 points, keeping them in strong contention for a knockout stage spot, while Olympiacos remain at the bottom with just two points after three matchdays.
This remarkable display not only underlines Mbappe’s immense talent but also reinforces Real Madrid’s resilience and ambition as they push for success in Europe’s premier club competition.
