The risk of saltwater intrusion is increasing in the Mekong Delta as water flow from the Mekong River continues to decline. Forecasts indicate that the situation will worsen through April and May 2026, raising concerns for agriculture and freshwater supply in the region.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, saltwater intrusion has already reached deep inland areas, with salinity levels penetrating up to 55 kilometers in some locations and even 70 kilometers along certain river systems. While conditions are expected to be less severe than previous extreme years, authorities are urging local communities to remain alert.
The government has implemented several preventive measures, including improved irrigation systems and water management infrastructure to control salinity and preserve freshwater resources. Reservoir levels remain relatively stable, helping to support agricultural activities, but the need for proactive planning remains critical.
Experts recommend a comprehensive approach, including crop adjustments, water conservation strategies, and continuous monitoring of weather patterns. In addition, rising tidal levels and potential flooding in coastal areas could further complicate the situation, requiring coordinated efforts to minimize risks and protect livelihoods.
