Record Sale of Mellon Blue Diamond Reaches $25.6 Million at Geneva Auction

Record Sale of Mellon Blue Diamond Reaches $25.6 Million at Geneva Auction

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In an extraordinary exhibition of wealth and heritage, the iconic Mellon Blue diamond achieved an impressive $25.6 million at Christie's auction in Geneva this Tuesday. This 9.51-carat internally flawless blue diamond was auctioned at the Hôtel des Bergues as part of the Magnificent Jewels collection.

Previously owned by the esteemed U.S. horticulturist and art connoisseur Bunny Mellon, the diamond, set within a serpentine ring, embodies the grandeur of a luxurious past. Max Fawcett, Christie’s head of jewellery in Geneva, referred to the gem as "a remarkable stone that symbolizes the Gilded Age lifestyle."

The final bid of 20,525,000 Swiss francs fell short of its last auction price in 2014, where it surpassed $32 million following Bunny Mellon's passing. Experts suggest that the reduced price reflects ongoing geopolitical tensions and a cautious worldwide market, notably affected by a sluggish Chinese economy, which may have deterred many prominent bidders.

Tobias Kormind, managing director of 77 Diamonds, noted, "The auction room atmosphere was noticeably cautious, and it remains uncertain whether this restraint will persist through the remainder of the Geneva auction season."

The sale at Christie's coincides with Sotheby’s auction of Royal and Noble Jewels in Geneva, showcasing historic items like a brooch taken from Napoleon Bonaparte after the Battle of Waterloo, along with the 10.08-carat Glowing Rose pink diamond, projected to garner around $20 million.

The Mellon Blue diamond, celebrated for its flawless clarity and rich history, continues to enchant collectors and aficionados globally, highlighting the everlasting fascination with rare blue diamonds.
