A 19-year-old man was taken into custody after allegedly damaging two valuable paintings at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The episode unfolded on Monday at about 4:40 p.m. inside the museum’s Fifth Avenue building, a major international cultural destination.
Authorities reported the suspect displayed erratic behavior and appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance when he poured water over two well-known works — Princesse de Broglie by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Madonna and Child with Saints by Girolamo dai Libri. Investigators say he also removed several tapestries from the wall before staff intervened.
Visitors alerted museum security, who escorted the individual from the galleries and summoned police. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief. Officials estimated total damage at about $4,000, with roughly $1,000 of harm attributed to each painting.
A Metropolitan Museum spokesperson stated that no visitors or major artworks suffered serious injury or loss, and commended both museum security and local law enforcement for their swift action to protect guests and the collection.
The Met, home to more than two million objects spanning around 5,000 years, is one of the United States’ most significant cultural institutions. The incident has prompted renewed discussion about measures to safeguard priceless art and strengthen museum security amid a rise in vandalism reports worldwide.
