In response to significant backlash regarding privacy, Meta has decided to terminate an AI-based image feature launched just days earlier. This tool allowed users to create images from content sourced from public Instagram profiles.
The company communicated the change via a public announcement, emphasizing that the feature will no longer be accessible due to the strong reactions it elicited.
“Our aim was to offer a valuable creative tool, giving individuals control over how their public content could be utilized,” Meta stated. “We acknowledge the feedback indicating that the feature did not meet user expectations, and thus we are withdrawing it.”
On Tuesday, Meta unveiled Muse Image, its first image-generation model created by Meta Superintelligence Labs, integrated within its AI chatbot.
This tool permitted users to generate AI-created images using their own pictures as input and offered an editing option for altering the produced images.
Immediately following its debut, the feature drew ire from users who were concerned about privacy violations. Numerous users criticized its automatic activation, which made it opt-in by default for accounts set to public.
Critics insisted that users deserved a more explicit choice before their public images could be repurposed in this manner.
Emmy-winning actress Hannah Einbinder, recognized for her role in the series "Hacks," publicly criticized the functionality via Instagram.
She pointed out that the setting was turned on by itself and encouraged users to disable it.
On Thursday, SAG-AFTRA, the union for actors and media professionals, urged its constituents and Instagram users alike to opt-out of the controversial feature.
The union emphasized that the incorporation of public images should be governed by a clear opt-in procedure.
“Any usage of Instagram users' images without a transparent opt-in mechanism is unacceptable and misreads public sentiment regarding the potential dangers and harms of such practices,” SAG-AFTRA asserted.
Following Meta's announcement on the feature's removal, SAG-AFTRA applauded this decision.
A union representative remarked, "Recognizing the risks of non-consensual digital replicas, retracting a feature that encouraged such behavior is a wise move. We commend this choice as responsible action.”
The discontinuation of the AI image feature underscores the mounting demand for tech companies to grant users transparent control over how their publicly shared images interact with AI technologies.
