Meta Platforms has urged the Malaysian government to adopt a more balanced approach as it considers restricting social media access for users under the age of 16. The company warned that a complete ban could have unintended consequences, including pushing young users toward less secure online platforms.
Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, Meta’s Southeast Asia public policy director Clara Koh highlighted that blanket restrictions have historically shown limited effectiveness. She explained that such measures often lead to a “migration effect,” where users shift to unregulated digital spaces lacking proper safety mechanisms.
The Malaysian government had earlier announced plans to work with social media companies to implement age-based restrictions by mid-2026. The proposal aims to address concerns around online safety, digital well-being, and exposure to harmful content among minors.
Meta, however, emphasized that outright bans may do more harm than good. Drawing on global experiences, including regulatory efforts in Australia, the company noted that enforcement challenges and uneven coverage across platforms can weaken the overall impact of such policies.
Koh suggested that Malaysia should focus on developing a nuanced regulatory framework that ensures consistent standards across all platforms. She stressed the need for industry-wide cooperation to create safer and more age-appropriate online experiences for young users.
The company also pointed out that social media plays a positive role in youth development, offering opportunities for communication, self-expression, and community engagement. Restricting access entirely could lead to feelings of isolation among teenagers, as seen in some countries with strict regulations.
Meta further recommended placing parents at the center of digital regulation, encouraging tools and policies that empower families to guide children’s online activity. The company reiterated its commitment to working with Malaysian authorities to ensure a safe yet inclusive digital environment.
