Mexico ended its 40-year FIFA World Cup knockout drought with an impressive 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the iconic Azteca Stadium. The co-host nation dominated the Round of 32 clash from the opening whistle and secured a place in the Round of 16, where it will meet either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Quinones and Jimenez Inspire Mexico
After a one-hour delay caused by stormy weather, Mexico immediately took control of the match. Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a powerful strike before setting up Raul Jimenez, who doubled the advantage with a superb finish before halftime. Ecuador struggled to respond as Mexico maintained control throughout the contest.
Why Was This Victory Historic?
Mexico had not won a FIFA World Cup knockout match since 1986, when it last hosted the tournament. The victory ended four decades of disappointment and extended Mexico's unbeaten World Cup record at the Azteca Stadium to 10 matches. The result also confirmed the team's excellent form after winning all three group-stage games without conceding a goal.
Young Star Creates History
Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora became the second-youngest player ever to start a FIFA World Cup knockout match, behind Brazilian legend Pele in 1958. The teenager delivered a confident performance, while Mexico's defence remained solid to secure another clean sheet.

Ecuador Fall Short Despite Second-Half Changes
Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece introduced several substitutions after the break in an attempt to change the game, but Mexico continued to create the better chances. Kevin Rodriguez came close to scoring late in the match before defender Piero Hincapie received a red card during stoppage time, ending Ecuador's hopes of a comeback.
What Does This Mean for the Tournament?
Mexico's commanding performance has strengthened its position as one of the strongest teams remaining in the FIFA World Cup 2026. With home support, defensive stability and attacking confidence, the team enters the Round of 16 with growing momentum. From the quarter-finals onward, all remaining matches will be played in the United States, making the competition even more challenging.
