In an impressive display, Yaxel Lendeborg and Roddy Gayle Jr. each netted 17 points, leading No. 7 Michigan to a dominant 102-72 victory against No. 21 Auburn on Tuesday. This decisive win guarantees Michigan a spot in the Players Era men's tournament championship in Las Vegas.
Michigan took command early in the game, responding superbly after Auburn's Tahaad Pettiford opened the scoring with two free throws. The Wolverines quickly ensued with an 11-0 run that established the pace for the contest. Nimari Burnett and Morez Johnson Jr. contributed significantly with 15 points each, helping the team surge ahead.
Auburn managed to reduce the gap to 28-20 thanks to a dunk from Filip Jovic, but Michigan retaliated with an 8-0 run, highlighted by Burnett's putback, and widened the score to 36-20 with 7:16 left in the first half. Lendeborg escalated matters further with a three-point play, pushing the margin to 44-24, and Gayle's three-pointer brought the score to 72-42 early in the second half. At halftime, Michigan enjoyed a commanding 59-31 lead.
In the second half, Michigan's dominance continued unabated. Gayle connected on another three-pointer to extend the lead to 85-52 with 9:26 remaining. With just over two minutes to play, Winters Grady's late trey increased the advantage to 100-65. The Wolverines displayed remarkable shooting accuracy, finishing at 51.5% from the field and 40% from three-point territory. Conversely, Auburn struggled, hitting just 35.5% of their shots and 41.7% from beyond the arc.
Michigan's prowess in rebounding and fastbreak execution was crucial to their success. They outrebounded Auburn 51-35 and garnered a staggering 29-3 advantage in fastbreak points. Trey McKenney added 11 points, while L.J. Cason contributed 10 points and made three steals, emphasizing the team effort from Michigan.
On the other hand, Auburn's efforts included Pettiford with 16 points, Keyshawn Hall with 15, Filip Jovic contributing 13 points, and KeShawn Murphy chipping in 12. Despite their contributions, the Tigers struggled to match Michigan's fervor and fell quickly behind.
This win marked Michigan's second consecutive blowout in the tournament, following their earlier defeat of San Diego State with a score of 94-54, resulting in an overall tournament point margin of +40. The Wolverines are set to face an unknown opponent in the championship game later on Tuesday night.
With a blend of strong shooting, rapid transitions, and cohesive teamwork, Michigan showcased an outstanding performance. With pivotal contributions from Lendeborg, Gayle, Burnett, and Johnson Jr., they are poised to vie for the tournament title, having established a high benchmark in both offensive and defensive play for the championship match.
