Microsoft Teams Adds Wi-Fi Based Office Attendance Tool

Microsoft Teams Adds Wi-Fi Based Office Attendance Tool

Post by : Shakul

Microsoft has introduced a new feature in Microsoft Teams that automatically updates an employee's office location when they connect to their organization's Wi-Fi network. The feature, known as Workplace Check-in via Wi-Fi, is being rolled out globally and aims to simplify workplace attendance tracking for hybrid employees.

The new capability became generally available in June 2026 and is listed under Microsoft's product roadmap. It expands on Teams' existing workplace check-in system, which previously required employees to manually indicate when they arrived at a specific office location or reserved workspace.

With the latest update, Teams can automatically recognize when a user connects to a designated corporate Wi-Fi network. Once connected, the platform updates the employee's work location status to reflect the building or office where they are currently working.

Microsoft said the feature has been designed with privacy protections in mind. Workplace Check-in via Wi-Fi is disabled by default and can only be activated by tenant administrators. Organizations must decide whether they want to make the feature available to employees.

Even after activation by administrators, employees maintain full control over their location sharing preferences. Users can choose to opt in or opt out at any time, ensuring that participation remains voluntary and aligned with workplace privacy expectations.

The company believes the feature will help organizations improve collaboration in hybrid work environments. By making office presence visible within Teams, employees can more easily coordinate meetings, find colleagues working nearby and organize in-person collaboration without additional communication.

Unlike traditional tracking methods that rely on badges or GPS technology, Microsoft's solution works entirely within the Teams ecosystem using recognized corporate Wi-Fi networks. The company emphasized that location information remains within the organization's tenant environment and is not shared externally.
