Acclaimed author Min Jin Lee, known for her bestselling novel Pachinko, is set to release her highly awaited new book, American Hagwon, on September 29. This novel addresses a pivotal issue for many Koreans: the significance of education.
Hagwons, private tutoring centers in Korea likened to “cram schools,” provide a variety of educational services, from English lessons to music classes. Lee clarifies that Hagwons encompass any private institution offering such learning.
At 57, Lee describes herself as an “accidental historian,” using her writing to engage with themes of history, race, gender, and class. American Hagwon marks the third installment in her series regarding Korea and its diaspora, succeeding Free Food for Millionaires (2007) and Pachinko (2017), with the latter adapted into a hit series on Apple TV+. In 2024, The New York Times noted it among the top novels of the 21st century.
Set to be published by Cardinal, the novel provides insight into how sudden life changes and uncertain success impact families. The narrative unfolds across Korea, Australia, and Southern California, centering on a middle-class Korean household grappling with the repercussions of the Asian financial crisis.
Reagan Arthur, Senior Vice President and Publisher at Cardinal, commended Lee’s latest work, stating it “captures the essence of generational transformation through unforgettable characters that resonate deeply with readers.”
Hailing from Seoul, Lee relocated to New York City at the tender age of seven. She pursued education at the Bronx High School of Science, Yale University, and Georgetown University Law School. Known for her meticulous approach, she dedicates years to research and writing, earning the nickname “the turtle” from her father for her steady yet deliberate pace.
“I aim to reflect societal truths, and as today’s youth would say, conduct a ‘vibe check,’” Lee shares, emphasizing her mission to weave history with genuine human experience.
