The Minnesota Wild showcased an impressive performance on Friday night, securing a 5-0 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Central to this victory was Filip Gustavsson, who made 19 saves to achieve his second shutout of the season. This win marks the Wild's fourth consecutive victory, highlighting their strong form on both offense and defense throughout November.
With three shutouts in their last six games, Minnesota has established a solid defensive strategy and goaltending prowess. The team has garnered eight wins this month, with only a single regulation loss to detract from their impressive streak. The Penguins, on their part, faced the Wild following a return from Sweden, where they split their matchup against Nashville in the Global Series.
Gustavsson has teamed up well with fellow goalie Jesper Wallstedt, who has also demonstrated exceptional form, including back-to-back shutouts against Calgary and Anaheim and a career-high 42 saves in a win over Carolina. This synergy has provided Minnesota with increased confidence in their goalkeeping.
Offensively, Minnesota was propelled by the efforts of Matt Boldy, who scored twice and provided one assist, demonstrating his continued scoring ability. Joel Eriksson Ek and Kirill Kaprizov each contributed a goal and an assist, while Marcus Johansson added a significant one-timer to secure an early lead. The Wild took control early, establishing a 3-0 lead within just over 11 minutes of play.
Boldy opened the scoring at 3:57 by deftly navigating around Pittsburgh goalie Arturs Silovs before producing a precise shot into the net. This goal marked the 11th consecutive game in which the Wild scored first, indicating their strong start in recent outings.
Eriksson Ek extended the lead with a power-play goal at 9:39—tipping in a shot just before a high-sticking double minor penalty against Blake Lizotte expired. Following swiftly, Johansson’s quick one-timer made it 3-0, intensifying the pressure on the struggling Penguins.
Kaprizov netted his 12th goal of the season early in the second period, redirecting a shot to beat Silovs, prompting a goalie change for Pittsburgh, with Sergei Murashov stepping in. Although Murashov faced ten shots, he stopped nine, but the Penguins' offense faltered against Minnesota's robust defense.
Boldy capped off his night with a second goal at 2:14 in the second period, marking a notable resurgence in his scoring, with eight goals in his last eight games. His performance has been crucial for Minnesota, aiding their ascent in the standings.
Looking ahead, the Wild will continue their road trip against Winnipeg on Sunday, while the Penguins will aim to rebound at home against Seattle on Saturday night following this defeat.
