Moderate 4.9 Earthquake Hits Western Nepal, No Casualties Reported

Moderate 4.9 Earthquake Hits Western Nepal, No Casualties Reported

Post by : Rameen Ariff

An earthquake registering 4.9 on the Richter scale rattled the Sudurpashchim province of western Nepal early Thursday morning, with tremors affecting several districts. According to the National Earthquake Monitoring Centre, the quake occurred at 1:08 am, with the epicenter identified near Dantola in the Bajhang district, located around 475 km to the west of Kathmandu. Thankfully, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Inhabitants of Bajhang and nearby districts, including Bajura, Baitadi, and Darchula, experienced the tremors. Many took to the streets seeking safety as they felt brief shakes within their homes. Authorities reassured the public that the situation remains stable, and no evacuations were deemed necessary.

Nepal is situated in a region frequently affected by seismic activity, categorized under Seismic Zones IV and V. This designation makes the country particularly susceptible to earthquakes, which happen multiple times each year. Experts are urging residents in vulnerable areas of western Nepal to stay vigilant and adhere to recommended earthquake safety measures.

This 4.9 magnitude earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the seismic threats facing Nepal and the critical importance of being prepared. Local authorities are actively monitoring for aftershocks to ensure public safety. Residents are encouraged to remain calm and report any damages they notice.

This event underlines Nepal's ongoing challenges with natural disasters. With enhanced monitoring and effective communication, the aim remains to minimize damages and protect lives in such situations. Though the quake was moderate, it reiterates the need for continuous awareness in this quake-prone region.
