MP Claims Near Miss at Chennai Airport Airline Disputes

A Member of Parliament, KC Venugopal, has shared a tense and frightening account of a flight he took from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi on Sunday, describing it as a “harrowing journey” that could have ended in tragedy. The MP claims that the plane narrowly avoided a collision at Chennai Airport when another aircraft reportedly entered the same runway during their first attempt to land.

However, the airline operating the flight has denied his version of events, saying there was no runway intrusion and insisting that the diversion to Chennai was purely due to a technical problem.

The Journey Begins with Delays

The trip began uneventfully but with frustration. Passengers were informed of a delayed departure before the aircraft even left Thiruvananthapuram. The delay meant that everyone was already restless when the plane finally took off.

Not long after take-off, things took a sudden turn. Venugopal recalled that the aircraft was hit by what he described as “unprecedented turbulence” — the kind that jolts passengers in their seats and causes overhead compartments to rattle. Several travellers clutched their armrests tightly as the plane swayed and shuddered in the air.

An Unexpected Announcement

About an hour into the journey, the captain’s voice came over the intercom. Passengers were told that there was a fault in the aircraft’s signal system — a critical component for safe navigation and landing. The pilot explained that, as a precaution, the flight would need to divert to Chennai instead of continuing to Delhi.

While the announcement was calm and professional, many passengers felt an immediate sense of unease. Technical faults are never taken lightly in aviation, and the uncertainty about what might happen next kept everyone on edge.

A Long Wait Above Chennai

As the plane reached Chennai’s airspace, it began circling the city rather than descending immediately. According to Venugopal, the aircraft circled for nearly two hours, waiting for clearance to land. The reasons for this delay were not explained in detail to passengers at the time, adding to the tension.

Some passengers tried to stay calm, distracting themselves with conversations, reading, or looking out the window. Others sat silently, watching the seatbelt sign glow steadily above their heads. The feeling of being in limbo at thousands of feet above the ground was unsettling.

A Heart-Stopping Moment

The real drama came during the first landing attempt. Venugopal claimed that, as the plane approached the runway, another aircraft was present on the same strip. In a split-second decision, the pilot abruptly pulled the plane upward, abandoning the landing.

The sudden climb caused a moment of shock among passengers. Drinks toppled from trays, and some passengers gasped as they felt the powerful thrust of the engines pushing the plane back into the sky. Venugopal later credited the captain’s quick reaction for saving “every single life on board.”

“This was not just skill — it was also sheer luck,” he wrote afterwards. “But safety should never depend on luck.”

Safe Landing on the Second Attempt

After the near miss, the pilot circled again, allowing enough time and space for a safe approach. On the second attempt, the aircraft touched down smoothly at Chennai Airport. While everyone breathed a sigh of relief, the earlier scare left a lasting impression. Some passengers were seen making phone calls immediately after landing, updating loved ones about the situation.

Two Conflicting Accounts

While Venugopal’s statement paints a dramatic picture of a near collision, the airline’s official explanation was far less alarming. In its clarification, the airline insisted there was no runway intrusion and that the diversion happened solely because of the technical fault reported earlier.

The MP strongly disagreed, saying that the pilot had clearly mentioned another aircraft on the runway in his announcement to passengers. He suggested that the airline’s version of events did not match what people on board had experienced.

Passenger Reactions and Public Attention

Other passengers have since shared similar memories of the flight — describing strong turbulence, the long period circling Chennai, and the sudden climb just before landing. Although not everyone could confirm seeing another aircraft, many agreed that the aborted landing was sudden and dramatic.

Venugopal’s account has drawn significant attention on social media, with many users expressing concern about air safety and the need for strict runway management at busy airports.

Questions Over Air Safety

  • The incident has raised important questions:
  • How did the supposed runway conflict occur, if at all?
  • Why did the plane have to wait nearly two hours before landing?
  • Was the technical fault linked to the near miss?

Aviation safety experts point out that busy airports like Chennai handle dozens of aircraft movements every hour. While pilots are trained to abort landings when necessary, such situations can be frightening for passengers — especially if they believe a collision was narrowly avoided.

Looking Ahead

It is not yet clear whether aviation authorities will investigate the incident further. In similar cases, both the airline’s operational logs and air traffic control records are reviewed to determine exactly what happened.

For now, passengers, crew, and the MP himself are safe — but the story highlights how quickly an ordinary flight can turn into a nerve-racking experience. It also shows the gap that can exist between official reports and passengers’ personal accounts.
