The highly anticipated women's singles final at the Mubadala DC Open was interrupted due to rain and lightning near the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington. Play is set to resume on Monday after the weather halted the championship match.
At the moment the game was paused, Jessica Pegula led 6-4, 1-2 after 55 minutes of action. Eala was serving in the second set when officials decided to suspend the match, with both players having successfully held serve with no break points faced.
Originally planned for noon, the final's start was postponed multiple times due to persistent rain. After enduring several setbacks, the competitors finally took to the court to commence their contest.
Pegula showcased a commanding start, clinching the opening set 6-4 with a composed and strategic approach, establishing an early lead.
In the second set, Alex Eala responded effectively, managing to hold her first two service games to take a brief lead of 2-1. However, the rain, accompanied by lightning, disrupted her momentum and forced the officials to suspend the match and clear the court.
At 21, Eala aims to secure her first WTA singles title, with this being just her second tour-level singles final.
Eala's path to the final was marked by impressive victories over notable opponents including Zheng Qinwen, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, world No. 10 Elina Svitolina, and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka.
Pegula is on the hunt for her second title in Washington, having previously claimed her first WTA singles trophy at this tournament seven years earlier. She also leads in the head-to-head record with Eala, having narrowly defeated her in the three-set semi-final at the 2025 Miami Open.
