Mumbai witnessed a dramatic hostage situation on Thursday when Rohit Arya, a 35-year-old man, held 17 children aged 8 to 14 captive in Powai’s RA Studios. The children were reportedly invited under the pretense of a web series audition. The tense ordeal lasted around two hours before police managed a daring rescue.
According to authorities, Arya opened fire on police officers using an air gun during the operation, prompting law enforcement to return a single round. Arya was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The Powai Police team received a distress call at approximately 1:45 pm and rushed to the studio, beginning negotiations with Arya. Despite repeated attempts, he refused to release the children. A forced entry through a bathroom ensured all 17 children were rescued unharmed.
Prior to the standoff, Arya had posted a video declaring he had chosen hostage-taking "instead of dying by suicide." In the video, he claimed he wanted "simple conversations" and threatened to set the place on fire if provoked, insisting he was "not a terrorist" and had no financial motives. Investigators recovered an air gun and chemical containers, believed to have been used to intimidate officers.
Authorities revealed Arya’s grievances were tied to the PLC Sanitation Monitor Project under Maharashtra’s "My School, Beautiful School" campaign, part of his “Let’s Change” initiative. Arya alleged the government owed him Rs 2 crore for his work, which he claimed remained unpaid since January 2024 despite prior partial cheques.
The incident has left Mumbai residents shaken but grateful for the swift action of law enforcement. Police confirmed the children are safe and receiving counselling, while an investigation into Arya’s motives continues.
This hostage crisis has sparked debates about security measures for children in urban areas and the mental health and grievances of individuals resorting to extreme actions.
