The Mumbai Indians have secured the services of West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2026 season. Rutherford will maintain his current contract valued at INR 2.6 crore, which adds significant strength to MI's middle order and bowling lineup. This acquisition is complemented by the signing of Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants, bolstering both batting and bowling capabilities ahead of the upcoming season.
At 27, Rutherford has accumulated 44 T20I appearances for the West Indies, notable for a record-breaking partnership of 139 runs with Andre Russell against Australia in Perth. In the IPL, he has played 23 matches across different teams, including Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders. He was part of the MI roster in 2020 but did not play that season.
Throughout his IPL journey, Rutherford has gathered 397 runs with an average of 24.81 and a strike rate of 137.37, featuring 25 fours and 26 sixes, although he is yet to record a half-century, with his top score standing at 46. His performance in 2025 saw an upswing, scoring 291 runs in 13 matches, averaging 32.33 with a striking rate of 157.30, hitting 22 fours and 18 sixes. His aggressive batting style and finishing talents make him a pivotal asset for MI.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Shardul Thakur joins Mumbai Indians for his existing fee of INR 2 crore after being traded from LSG, where he played 10 matches in the previous season as an injury replacement. Renowned for his multi-dimensional skills, Thakur can contribute significantly in both batting and bowling, enhancing MI's tactical flexibility.
With the incorporation of Rutherford and Thakur, Mumbai Indians aim for a formidable batting depth and enhanced bowling attack. Coach Mark Boucher will benefit from greater options in team selection and strategic adjustments during matches. These acquisitions underscore MI’s objective to field a well-rounded team ready to compete vigorously in IPL 2026.
As one of the premier teams in IPL history, Mumbai Indians have clinched the title five times, sharing the record with Chennai Super Kings. However, they have been without a title since 2020. Last season, MI made it to Qualifier 2 but were eliminated by Punjab Kings in a close match. These recent signings reflect MI’s determination to reclaim the championship title in IPL 2026.
The arrivals of Sherfane Rutherford and Shardul Thakur offer Mumbai Indians additional options in the middle order, capable finishes, and a stronger bowling unit. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to observe how these roster changes influence MI’s performance in the fiercely competitive landscape of IPL 2026.
