A devastating explosion rocked Myanmar's northeastern Shan State on Sunday, killing more than 45 people and injuring dozens in one of the deadliest industrial accidents reported in the region this year. The blast occurred in Kaungtup village in Namhkam Township, an area located close to the Chinese border and currently under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
According to rescue workers at the scene, the explosion took place around midday at a facility believed to be storing large quantities of explosives used for mining and quarrying operations. The force of the blast was so powerful that it destroyed nearby structures, sent debris flying across the village, and created panic among residents.
Emergency response teams immediately launched rescue operations and began searching through the rubble for survivors. Local rescuers reported that at least 46 bodies had been recovered by Sunday evening, including several children. More than 70 injured residents were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, while rescue efforts continued late into the night.
The explosion also caused widespread property damage across the surrounding area. Preliminary assessments indicated that over 100 homes suffered varying levels of destruction, leaving many families displaced. Images circulating on local media platforms showed damaged buildings, shattered roofs, and thick smoke rising above the village following the incident.
Initial investigations suggest the blast originated from stored gelignite, a powerful explosive commonly used in mining and rock blasting activities. Experts note that gelignite can become highly unstable if stored improperly or kept for extended periods. Authorities are now working to determine the exact cause of the explosion and whether safety procedures were followed.
The TNLA confirmed that the explosives were being stored by its economic department for use in mining-related activities. The organization announced that a formal investigation has been launched and pledged cooperation with local authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
The tragedy comes amid ongoing instability in Myanmar, where armed conflict and political tensions have continued since the military takeover in 2021. As rescue teams work to support survivors and affected families, local communities are mourning the significant loss of life caused by this catastrophic explosion.
