Myanmar has announced a major decision affecting prisoners across the country, as the government ordered a reduction in all prison sentences. The move was made under the leadership of Min Aung Hlaing, who recently assumed the role of civilian president after years of military control.
According to official statements, all prisoners will have their remaining sentences reduced by one sixth. This decision was introduced as part of a public holiday measure, which is often used in Myanmar to grant sentence reductions or pardons.
The order also applies to detained political leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been in custody since the military coup in 2021. Sources close to her party confirmed that her sentence will also be reduced under this announcement.
However, the exact impact of this reduction on Suu Kyi’s imprisonment remains unclear. There is uncertainty about how much of her sentence has already been served and how much time remains after the reduction is applied.
Aung San Suu Kyi was originally sentenced to more than thirty years in prison after facing multiple charges, including corruption and violations of pandemic rules. Many international organisations and rights groups have criticized these charges, saying they were politically motivated.
In 2023, her sentence was partially reduced to 27 years following a pardon on some charges. With this latest reduction, her total remaining time in prison may decrease further, but no official figures have been provided.
Myanmar has been under military influence since the 2021 coup, which removed Suu Kyi’s elected government from power. The country has since experienced political instability and ongoing conflict in several regions.
Observers have described recent actions by the government, including sentence reductions and limited reforms, as attempts to improve its international image. However, critics argue that these steps do not represent real political change.
Despite her detention, Suu Kyi remains a widely respected figure within Myanmar. Reports suggest that she has been held in isolation for long periods, and concerns have been raised about her health and well being.
