Myanmar Boosts Trains for Thingyan Travel Rush

Myanmar Boosts Trains for Thingyan Travel Rush

Post by : Shakul

Myanmar Railways has announced an expansion of train services to manage the surge in passengers during the Thingyan holiday. Special trains will operate alongside regular services on major routes, including Yangon–Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon–Pyay, and Yangon–Mawlamyine, ensuring smoother connectivity across key regions.

The additional trains will run on selected dates in April, with fixed and carefully planned schedules to handle peak travel demand. Authorities said the move is aimed at facilitating convenient travel for tourists, workers, and government employees returning to their hometowns for the festive celebrations.

Officials have confirmed that fares and station stops for these special trains will remain the same as those of regular services. This decision is intended to keep travel affordable and accessible, especially during a time when millions of people are expected to be on the move.

Passengers will also benefit from improved booking options. Tickets can be purchased in advance at railway stations or through the Online Railway Ticketing and Payment System (ORTP), allowing travelers to better plan their journeys and avoid last-minute rush.

To accommodate the growing number of passengers, special trains will be operated at full capacity, with a mix of upper-class and ordinary coaches. This is expected to significantly ease overcrowding and ensure a more comfortable travel experience during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Meanwhile, several regular passenger and commuter train services will be temporarily suspended between April 13 and 16, coinciding with the peak days of the Thingyan festival. Authorities clarified that these temporary adjustments are part of a broader plan to optimize resources and manage traffic efficiently.

Officials further stated that all train services will resume normal operations after the holiday period, restoring full connectivity across Myanmar’s railway network. Additionally, scenic routes may also be operated depending on passenger demand, offering travelers more options during the festive season.
