Renowned makeup artist Namita Soni has shed light on the increasing challenges faced by makeup professionals due to unrealistic expectations set by social media. With a portfolio that includes Bollywood icons like Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai, Soni shared her insights while preparing for the wedding of Netra Mantena and Vamsi Gadiraju at the picturesque Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur.
The seasoned artist noted that many brides struggle to finalize their desired look, often relying on mood boards. “I sometimes create about six different boards for each outfit,” Soni revealed. Despite preparing various makeup and hairstyle options, she finds that many brides still hold onto expectations that are difficult to meet.
According to Soni, platforms like Instagram and Pinterest significantly contribute to these unrealistic standards, with brides often bringing in heavily filtered images as references. “They show me these 'no-makeup' photos, and I say, 'This has 18 filters on it. I can’t recreate this look,'” she articulated. She emphasized that while she can enhance beauty, replicating digital alterations is impossible.
Soni also mentioned that dissatisfaction can arise if brides don’t see themselves matching the filtered images they provide. The allure of over-editing can lead to frustration when real-world results fall short. “Brides often edit their photos—over-correcting and beautifying,” she explained. Family responses can escalate the pressure, further complicating the makeup process.
Building trust is essential in Soni’s approach to bridal makeup. She believes that when brides trust her expertise, they can achieve a beautiful and personalized look. Recalling her work with stars like Sushmita Sen—whom she described as “dynamic”—Soni emphasized understanding each person's unique style over conforming to unrealistic ideals.
Soni’s reflections underline a pressing concern in the beauty and wedding sectors: social media often distorts perceptions of true beauty, fostering unattainable goals. Her message for brides is straightforward—embrace your genuine self, trust your makeup artist, and focus on enhancing your natural beauty rather than chasing a filtered illusion.
