Authorities in Nanning, the capital of China's southwestern Guangxi region, have raised the city's flood control emergency response to Level I, the highest warning level, after Typhoon Maysak brought extremely heavy rainfall that caused rivers and reservoirs to swell.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), the emergency response was upgraded from Level III to Level I because of the severe rainfall affecting the city. Nanning is home to nearly 9 million people and is facing increased flood risks as the storm continues to impact the region.
State-run Xinhua News Agency reported that a breach occurred at a medium-sized reservoir in Hengzhou, an area under Nanning's administration. Local authorities have started evacuating residents from the affected area to ensure their safety.
Officials are closely monitoring the flood situation as heavy rain continues to put pressure on water bodies across the region.
Typhoon Maysak made landfall in China's southern island province of Hainan on Friday, becoming the first tropical cyclone to reach the Chinese mainland this year.
After crossing Hainan, the storm made its second landfall in Vietnam on Sunday. Vietnam shares a border with China's Guangxi region, where the effects of the storm continue to be felt.
Chinese meteorologists said Typhoon Maysak is expected to weaken further as it moves inland. However, the storm's remnants, combined with seasonal southwestern rains, are expected to continue bringing heavy rainfall to Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, and other nearby areas.
Authorities remain on alert as continued rainfall could increase the risk of flooding across the affected regions.
