Police in Nara City have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a robbery at a convenience store, an incident that has raised concerns over late-night retail security in the region.
According to investigators, the suspect—identified as Seima Nakai—allegedly entered a Ministop outlet in the early hours of Monday, around 3 a.m., armed with a knife. He reportedly threatened the store clerk and demanded cash before fleeing with approximately 182,000 yen.
At the time of the incident, no customers were present inside the store, and the employee on duty was not physically harmed, police confirmed.
Authorities were able to identify and locate the suspect using footage collected from multiple security cameras installed in and around the store. The use of surveillance technology played a key role in the swift progress of the investigation.
Despite the arrest, Nakai has denied the allegations. In his statement to police, he claimed that he had only gone out to buy sweets and believed the store was closed, insisting that he simply passed by the location.
Police are continuing their investigation to verify the sequence of events and gather further evidence. Officials have also reiterated the importance of security systems in helping solve crimes quickly, particularly in urban retail environments across Japan.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about convenience store safety, especially during late-night hours when staffing is minimal and stores remain open 24/7.
