NASA has shared a stunning image of the Moon captured by the Artemis II crew during their historic mission. The image reveals the Orientale Basin along the edge of the lunar surface, a feature that has rarely been seen in such detail.
The Artemis II mission includes four astronauts — Jeremy Hansen, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Koch — traveling aboard the Orion spacecraft. This marks the first human mission heading toward the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission.
The mission aims to photograph the Moon’s far side and test deep-space travel capabilities. Artemis II is expected to travel over 400,000 kilometers from Earth, setting new records for human spaceflight distance before looping around the Moon and returning without landing.
The nearly 10-day mission is scheduled to end with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. NASA plans to use this mission as a stepping stone for future lunar landings, including a goal to land astronauts near the Moon’s south pole by 2028.
