National Testing Agency has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 after reviewing investigation inputs and reports shared by law enforcement agencies. The cancellation has affected around 22.79 lakh students who had registered for one of India’s biggest medical entrance examinations. The government has also ordered a detailed investigation into the matter and referred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation for further inquiry.
The NEET UG examination was held across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad at more than 5,400 examination centres. According to official figures, the examination involved one of the largest student participation numbers in the world. The National Testing Agency said the decision to cancel the examination was taken in order to protect the credibility and trust of the national examination system.
The NTA stated that the decision was made after examining various investigative findings in coordination with central agencies. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the complete details regarding the alleged irregularities, but officials indicated that the integrity of the examination process may have been compromised. The agency emphasized that continuing with the existing examination results could have caused long-term damage to the credibility of the system.
The announcement has created anxiety and uncertainty among lakhs of students and parents across the country. Many students had spent months preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance test, which determines admission into undergraduate medical courses across India. Students are now waiting for fresh examination dates and revised admit card schedules, which the NTA said will be announced through official channels soon.
Earlier, the National Testing Agency had highlighted strict security arrangements for the examination. More than 6,000 observers were reportedly deployed at examination centres, while over two lakh personnel were mobilized to ensure smooth conduct of the exam. Despite these arrangements, the emergence of alleged irregularities forced authorities to reconsider the validity of the examination.
Education experts say the cancellation of such a large-scale examination is a major administrative and academic challenge. Re-conducting the examination for nearly 23 lakh candidates will require fresh planning, additional security arrangements and coordination between multiple government agencies. Authorities are also expected to strengthen digital monitoring, surveillance and verification systems to avoid similar issues in the future.
The NTA acknowledged that re-conducting the exam would create inconvenience and emotional stress for students and their families. However, the agency stated that maintaining fairness and public confidence in the examination process was more important. Students have been advised to regularly check official NTA announcements for updates regarding the new examination dates, admit cards and further instructions related to the re-examination process.
