Neon is entering the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as one of the most powerful names in international cinema after achieving an extraordinary record of six consecutive Palme d’Or victories. The independent film distributor, founded in 2017, has become one of the most influential forces in the global movie industry despite operating with a relatively small team compared to major Hollywood studios.
The company’s chief executive and co-founder Tom Quinn said the success has continued to surprise the company every year. According to Quinn, Neon never enters Cannes expecting to win the Palme d’Or, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in world cinema after the Academy Award for Best Picture. He explained that the company focuses mainly on supporting filmmakers and strong creative storytelling rather than commercial formulas or franchise-based filmmaking.
This year, Neon is backing more than a quarter of the 22 films competing for the Palme d’Or. Some of the most anticipated films at Cannes are connected to the company, including movies by acclaimed filmmakers such as Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Na Hong-jin and James Gray. Industry experts believe Neon has a strong chance of extending its winning streak to seven consecutive Palme d’Or victories.
Neon’s rise has become even more significant at a time when major Hollywood studios have reduced their presence at international film festivals like Cannes. Festival director Thierry Frémaux recently expressed concern about the declining involvement of traditional studios in Cannes. In contrast, independent companies like Neon and A24 have gained worldwide recognition by focusing on original storytelling and filmmaker-driven cinema instead of relying on big-budget franchise productions.
The company previously helped distribute internationally celebrated films such as Parasite, Anora, Anatomy of a Fall and Titane. Several of these films not only won the Palme d’Or but also achieved major success at the Academy Awards. “Parasite” famously became the first non-English-language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, helping break barriers for international cinema in Hollywood.
Tom Quinn explained that Neon’s strategy is based on trusting directors and supporting creative risks. He revealed that the company often chooses films based on confidence in filmmakers rather than commercial calculations. Some projects were signed even before scripts were completed, while others were acquired during the Cannes Film Festival itself. This filmmaker-focused approach has helped Neon build a strong reputation among global directors and cinema audiences.
This year’s Cannes lineup backed by Neon includes a wide range of international productions from Japan, South Korea, Romania and other countries. The company’s growing influence reflects the increasing popularity of independent and global cinema among audiences worldwide. As the Cannes Film Festival begins, industry observers are closely watching whether Neon can once again dominate the festival and continue one of the most remarkable winning streaks in modern film history.
