Nepal Curfew Continues After Deadly Hindu-Muslim Clashes

Nepal Curfew Continues After Deadly Hindu-Muslim Clashes

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Several towns in southeastern Nepal remained under an indefinite curfew on Friday as authorities worked to control tensions following days of sectarian violence between Hindu and Muslim communities.

The clashes began on Sunday in Diwanganj, Sunsari district, near the Nepal-India border, after a dispute reportedly broke out over loud music and religious flags during a Hindu religious event. The confrontation later escalated into violent clashes, leaving at least three people dead and 25 others injured.

According to police officials, two people were killed by gunfire in Sunsari district during the initial violence on Sunday. A third death was reported on Thursday in neighbouring Siraha district, where clashes continued amid rising tensions.

Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle said investigations into the incidents were underway. Authorities have not yet confirmed all details surrounding the deaths but said those responsible for the violence would face legal action.

Curfew Enforced to Prevent Further Violence

Although no fresh violence was reported on Friday, security forces maintained strict restrictions in several towns across Sunsari and Siraha districts to prevent further clashes.

The situation remained tense as authorities increased security deployment and monitored sensitive areas affected by the communal unrest.

Nepal Prime Minister Calls for Peace

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah appealed for calm and urged citizens to avoid actions that could increase tensions.

In a televised address to the nation, Shah said the government would conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the violence and ensure that those responsible were punished through a transparent legal process.

"The government will conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the violence and punish those responsible," Shah said while addressing the country.

Government Announces Relief for Victims’ Families

Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung met the families of the two people killed in Sunsari and announced financial assistance of around $6,660 for each family, according to a government statement.

Gurung was also scheduled to visit Siraha district to meet the family of the third victim and discuss further support measures.

Authorities Focus on Restoring Normalcy

The Nepal government and local authorities are now focusing on restoring peace and preventing further communal tensions. Security officials continue to monitor the affected districts as investigations into the violence move forward.

The incident has raised concerns over communal harmony in Nepal, with authorities urging people from all communities to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
